Film Review – Transformers: Age Of Extinction

Movie Night: Blood Sport

Frank Dux has spent most his life being trained by Tanaka to participate in the Kumite, the ultimate martial arts tournament, where participants are seriously injured, even killed.

We are switching up on the next instalment of our World Cup related Movie Nights. Only this time around, instead of the best in the world gathering to kick a ball, they gather to kick each other. We see Monsieur Van-Damme in his early days before he became the big action star that we know him as. The acting and dialogue in this film is very amusing, but then again the focus is meant to be the martial arts tournament.

As many teams drop out of the World Cup at this stage of the tournament, if your team hasn’t won you can treat yourself to a parody of drama whilst watching good performances of physical prowess. Not to mention the epic 80s training montage at the beginning.

It has a rating of 6.8 on IMDb and 33% Rotten Tomatoes. Check it out and give us your rating.

Movie Night: Shaolin Soccer

20140612-174031-63631404.jpgA young Shaolin follower reunites with his discouraged brothers to form a soccer team using their martial art skills to their advantage. Starring Stephen Chow, Wei Zhao, Yat-fei Wong & Man Tat Ng

Its World Cup time! So we have a topical pick for movie night this week: Shaolin Soccer, which is directed by and starring Stephen Chow as a kung fu master who applies his martial arts skills to football as he recruits his siblings to win the national cup.

The film is an over the top mix of football and kung fu with a lot of comedy.

We’re gonna have to let the fact that it says “Soccer” slide. I guess they went for alliteration to sound cool. The blend of martial art moves in a football setting really works well. The interactions between the brothers and the always-needed-in-a-sports-movie montage are great. I can’t overstate how funny the comedy is to me. Don’t be off-put by the fact it is in another language. There is also a English dubbed version (but i prefer the subbed version).

Have fun watching this and have fun watching whatever team you’re supporting in Brazil!

The film has received a 7.3 on iMDB and 91% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Movie Night: 10 Things I Hate About You

A new kid must find a guy to date the meanest girl in school, the older sister of the girl he has a crush on, who cannot date until her older sister does. Starring Julia Styles, Heath Ledger, Larisa Oleynik, Joseph Gordon Levitt

10 Things I Hate About You is probably my favourite teen film and such a cult classic. This along with the Breakfast Club and Mean Girls should be top of any teen film list. It contains such a talented ensemble cast with Julia Stiles, Heath Ledger, Larisa Oleynik and the great Jo-Go-Lev. It is a modern take on the Shakespeare tale ‘The Taming of the Shrew’ .

Larisa Oleynik plays the popular younger sister who is forbidden from dating unless her more level headed older sister (Stiles) is also dating. JoGoLev tries to arrange a solution to the dilemma by enrolling Heath Ledger, who is the enigmatic new guy, to go out with Stiles. As you can imagine not everything goes to plan and hilarity and confusion ensues The film manages to bring together great dialogue, great acting and an awesome soundtrack. The film has a score of 7.2 on iMDB and 61% on Rotten Tomatoes.
